Problem
The goal of this project was to create a packaging design inspired by a TV show or movie. I chose the hit Netflix show Peaky Blinders. I wanted the design to feel authentic to the 1920s rather than like modern fan merchandise. The challenge was balancing historical influence with strong visual storytelling that reflected the intensity and rebellious spirit of the Shelby family.
Solution
I designed Fierce Flame, a vintage-inspired matchbox inspired by the bold personalities of the Shelby Brothers. Using striking typography, a limited red-and-cream color palette, and symbolic imagery, the final design feels like a believable product that could exist within the Peaky Blinders world.
Process
I began by researching early 1900s London matchbooks and packaging design to better understand the visual trends of the time period. During this process, I noticed recurring themes such as bold condensed typography, strong red tones, animal mascots, and simplified but impactful layouts. Using those references, I developed multiple design iterations focused on creating an authentic vintage feel while still maintaining a cinematic presence.
The hand drawn bear icon became the centerpiece of the design, symbolizing the fierce and aggressive nature of the Shelby brothers, while the surrounding flames represent their destructive, fearless energy and tendency to leave a lasting impact(sometimes in the form of arson).
Why This Is Important
This project highlights the importance of research-driven design and environmental storytelling. Rather than directly copying existing Peaky Blinders branding, the design builds its own identity through symbolism, typography, and historical influence. The final result demonstrates how packaging design can communicate mood, narrative, and character while still functioning as a believable period-inspired product.
